General information on courses
Exemptions for attending courses
Who can grant exemptions for the simultaneous attendance of two courses, one of which is a prerequisite for attending the other according to the curriculum, or who can override the registration requirements implemented in UNIGRAZonline in individual cases?
Applications for exemptions must be submitted to the Dean of Studies, Prof. Margit Reitbauer. If an exemption is granted, please send it by email to the teaching officer of the department, Ms. Sandra Steurer. You will be registered for the course once you have been allocated a fixed place. Please note, however, that the exemption does NOT imply a fixed place!
Please also note that the grade of the course that forms the prerequisite for the course attended with exemption must be entered in UNIGRAZonline before the completition date of the approved course.
NB: Approval to participate does not automatically imply admission to the examination, which is why there is always a certain risk if you are not sure that you will meet the participation requirements at least at the time of the examination.
Recognition of courses
How does the crediting of courses from other degree programs or from abroad work?
The Dean's Office of the Faculty of Humanities has detailed instructions for this.
Can courses from universities of applied sciences or teacher training colleges / universities be recognized as free electives (FWF)?
Yes, any course from any accredited university in Austria or abroad as well as any domestic university of applied sciences can be recognized as an FWF.
How does the recognition of language examinations work?
A successfully completed language training examination must be registered and entered in UNIGRAZonline. If this does not happen, please remind the examiner to register it and enter the grade in UNIGRAZonline.
Who do I contact if I have questions about the advance notification, learning agreement or recognition from abroad?
In this case, please contact the responsible chairperson of the Curriculum Commission directly.
Where should the applications for advance notification/recognition or Learning Agreements be sent?
Please send the applications for advance notification as pdf documents to lehramtsstudien(at)uni-graz.at. The chairperson of the Curriculum Commission will then sign the applications electronically.
Learning Agreements, on the other hand, must be printed out and submitted to the Chairperson of the Curriculum Commission for handwritten signature.
Crediting of a cultural studies course from a non-Roman studies program
Which courses can I have credited as cultural studies courses from a non-Roman studies program?
A few possible courses are the following:
- VO Introduction to Cultural Studies (Department for Slavic Studies)
- VO Foundations of Cultural Theory (Department of American Studies)
- VO Cultural Studies Lecture (Department of American Studies)
- VO British Culture: History and Society (Department of English Studies)
- VO American Culture: History and Society (Department of American Studies)
- PS Researching intercultural experience in student exchange in higher education (Note: target group are students who mentor visiting students, incoming visiting students and outgoing exchange students who are preparing for their semester abroad)
- SE Seminar on cultural studies (Department of Slavic Studies)*
- VU/VO Selected Topics in Cultural Studies (Department of Slavic Studies)*
- PS Analysis of Slavic cultural forms (Department of Slavic Studies)*
*If you are interested in one of these courses, please ask the lecturer in advance whether the course will be held in German or in the target language, as this may vary depending on the lecturer.
In addition to the above-mentioned courses, there are of course other options. However, if you choose another course, you should check in advance with the Cuko chairperson of Romance Studies whether the course you have chosen is suitable.
When making your choice, if the course you have chosen is not a lecture course, you should also consider your chances of getting a fixed place. As the course is not a compulsory subject for you, in most cases you will be ranked after those students for whom the course is a compulsory subject.

What happens if I am abroad during the semester in which they are offered or cannot attend them for some other reason?
As a general rule, you should plan your studies in such a way that you take into account the frequency of courses on offer (in the full-year offer on UGO) from the outset and give priority to courses that are offered less frequently. If there are constrains that cause a delay in your studies, you can have equivalent courses from abroad credited. In cases of hardship, the Cuko chairperson can grant an exemption for a parallel attendance of courses.
Prerequisites for courses
Is a positive grade in Corrective Phonetics from the SA 1 a prerequisite for attending the Linguistics VU "Phonetics and Phonology"?
No, not in any of the Romance Studies programs.
Is a positive grade in Corrective Phonetics from the SA 1 a prerequisite for attending the SA 2?
Only for the SA 2 courses in the area of oral competence (applies to the expiring Teacher Training program, Bachelor Teacher Training and Bachelor Romance Studies).
Bringing forward courses (Bachelor teaching degree)
When can I bring forward courses from the 2nd stage of my studies?
The curriculum provides for the following regulation: Students can bring forward courses from the second stage of studies to the first stage of studies. In detail, the respective provisions in Section III (Pre-service teacher training and practical school training) and Section IV (Teaching subjects) apply . Specifically, this means that it is possible to bring forward courses from the second stage of studies without any problems, but only if you meet the participation requirements for the respective course. The participation requirements can be found in the current curriculum.
Subject didactics
Didactic support for PPS4 (French, Italian, Spanish)
Do I have to complete the didactic support for PPS4 (French, Italian, Spanish) at the same time as the internship?
No. The didactic support for PPS4 is currently only offered once per academic year and can - but does not have to - be completed in parallel with the internship at the school.
Completion of the thematic proseminars in subject didactics
Can the thematic proseminar on subject didactics 1 and the thematic proseminar on subject didactics 2 be completed in parallel?
Yes, both proseminars can be completed at the same time.
Do the thematic proseminar on subject didactics 1 and the thematic proseminar on subject didactics 2 have to be completed language-specifically?
No, but it is recommended to complete at least one thematic proseminar in the language of the subject, i.e. language-specific. In principle, however, it is also possible to complete both proseminars in a language-specific or cross-language format.

Examinations
Examinations
How many times can I take an exam?
- In principle, examinations and courses that have been assessed negatively can be repeated three times (a total of four attempts).
- Examinations and courses of the StEOP may only be repeated twice (a total of three attempts).
- If you would like to take a course that is offered exclusively as part of a StEOP as a free elective, you have two repetitions (three attempts) (§ 16 Para. 5 of the statutes, part of the study regulations).
- Students in NAWI Graz degree programs (Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Molecular Biology) have the right to repeat examinations and courses four times (five attempts in total).
How do I proceed if I can no longer register via UNIGRAZonline to repeat a course with continuous assessment or if I have to take a board examination, which is compulsory from the third repetition?
In both cases, it is necessary to register via the Dean's Office by submitting the completed registration form on the GEWI homepage. In the case of a new participation, the "Application for assessment in an examination file" must be marked with "no", in the case of a board examination with "yes".
The student can propose the examination board. The entire examination senate must assess the student's performance. In any case, the Dean of Studies chairs the examination senate at the last possible examination.
Registration for lecture exams
Why can I register in UNIGRAZonline to attend a lecture in the Bachelor's program, but the system will not allow me to take the exam?
Because most of the lectures are assigned to the Master's degree program and examinations for courses from the Master's degree program may only be taken once you have completed 90% of the Bachelor's degree program. Exceptions are "Introduction to diachronic and synchronic Romance linguistics", "The literatures of the Romance world in a historical-cultural context" and "History of language".
You can therefore attend the lecture for the sake of interest, but possibly take the exam later. These take place at the end of the current semester and in the two semesters following the semester in which the course is held.
Language training
Language training
Can I also attend the courses from SA 1 separately?
This is theoretically possible, but does not make sense for didactic reasons.
- If possible, attend at least the 4 lessons from Receptive Competence and Productive Competence together, as they form a unit in terms of content.
- If possible, also attend the groups that belong together (A and B), as this is the only way to ensure continuous progression.
If there are too many overlaps in your timetable, you may be able to attend Corrective Phonetics in the following semester; however, please note that these courses are always fully booked due to the limited number of language lab places available. Please also note that corrective phonetics is a prerequisite for attending the SA 2 courses on oral skills.
Can I attend the SA2 courses separately?
If the SA2 courses are held by the same lecturer, it is possible that both courses must be attended with the same lecturer. If in doubt, please check with the respective lecturer.
Master's degree in Secondary Education: SA5 or Intercultural Communication?
In the Teacher Training Master's program, I can choose between the courses "Language Training and Language Teaching: Thematic Focus" and "Reception and Production of Scientific Texts" of the SA5 and the course "Intercultural Communication". What should I take?
It is strongly recommended that you take both the language training courses as well as "Intercultural Communication" and have one credited as a required course and the other as an elective.
Electives and supplementary subject
Free electives
Which courses can I have credited as free electives?
Free electives can be freely chosen from the courses offered by all recognized universities in Austria and abroad as well as all universities of applied sciences and universities of teacher education in Austria (free electives, § 18 para. 2 of the Statutes of the University). Please note, however, that if you wish to attend courses at universities other than your home university, you must first register as a co-registered student at the respective university. The procedure for registering as a co registered student varies from university to university. For further information, it is therefore best to visit the homepage of the respective university.
They serve to impart knowledge and skills in areas related to your own subject as well as in areas of general interest. It is also possible to complete a maximum of 8 weeks of full-time work experience (equivalent to 12 ECTS credits) as part of the free electives. This internship must be approved by the responsible study-related bodies and must be a meaningful addition to the degree program. (§ 18 Para. 5 of the statute section on study regulations)
It is recommended to choose the free electives from the following areas:
- University-wide part of the base module
- Courses and modules from the degree program from which the second subject was completed to the extent of 24 ECTS credits
- Language propaedeutics (e.g. at Treffpunkt Sprachen)
- Related and basic disciplines (humanities and cultural studies, social sciences, psychology, etc.)
- Interdisciplinary courses (e.g. Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, Jewish Studies, courses offered by the Center for American Studies, the Center for Information Modelling in the Humanities)
It is recommended to choose modules (and not individual courses) as free electives.
Can I divide my free electives between my two subjects or between two sections?
Unfortunately, this is not possible as the ECTS credits for the free electives must be calculated separately for each subject and each section. You should attain the minimm number of ECTS credits for the free electives, but exceeding this limit is not a problem. If you want to have a very large course (e.g. 10 ECTS) credited, you can ask the Coordination Office for Teacher Training whether an exception is possible. In an emergency, the respective Cuko chairperson of the teaching subject will decide.
As there may be slight differences between the ECTS credits to be completed for free electives in the various subjects, you should also make sure you know how many ECTS credits you have to complete per section in each of your two subjects. Information on this can be found in the respective study plan and transcript of records.
Compulsory elective subject or supplementary subject
What is meant by a bound elective or supplementary subject?
In addition to the subject-specific compulsory subjects in the Bachelor's degree program, 24 ECTS credits must be completed from a second or a supplementary subject. While the compulsory electives are anchored in the Faculty of Humanities, the supplementary subjects are anchored in other faculties.
Which subjects can I have credited as compulsory electives (second subject)?
In addition to the subject-specific compulsory subjects, you must complete 24 ECTS credits of bound electives from one of the following Bachelor's degree programs (second subject):
- Ancient History and Classical Studies
- English/American Studies
- Archaeology (classical and provincial Roman archaeology)
- Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian
- European Ethnology
- German Studies
- German History
- Greek
- Art History
- Latin
- Philosophy
- Romance Studies (French)
- Romance Studies (Spanish)
- Russian
- Slovenian
- Linguistics
The 24 ECTS credits from the boundelective subject are made up of the subject-specific part of the base module from the second subject (9 ECTS credits) and the additional modules from the second subject (15 ECTS credits).
Which subjects can I have credited as supplementary subjects?
As part of the bound electives, you can choose from one of the following other subjects as a supplementary subject:
- Business Administration
- Biology
- Economics
- Geography
- Information Modelling (in the humanities)
- Mathematics
- Musicology
- Portuguese
- Law
- Sociology
- Theology
Supplementary subjects that are defined in other curricula and have been completed in full by students can be recognized for the compulsory electives in individual cases.
More detailed information on the supplementary subject modules can be found in the respective curriculum.
Crediting of courses as free electives for two degree programs
If I am pursuing two studies, can the courses from one study program be credited as free electives for the other study program?
Yes, if you are completing two degree programs in parallel or consecutively, the courses from one degree program can be used for the second degree program.
Second Romance language
Second Romance language
To attend the SA 1 (language training level 1) in the chosen second Romance language, students of a Bachelor's degree program in Romance Studies require prior knowledge corresponding to CEFR level A2. The requirements are therefore the same as for the first Romance language. For information on the placement test, please click here.
Portuguese as a second Romance language
If I study Portuguese as a "second Romance language", is the basic course sufficient or do I have to take the SA1?
As with the other Romance languages, you must complete the SA 1. The prerequisite is the basic course of Portuguese course (but only 1 semester, free elective, 9 ECTS).
Two Romance subjects
Provisions for teacher training students of two Romance languages
Is it true that I only have to attend certain courses once when studying two Romance languages and can replace the second course with another one?
Teacher training students of two Romance languages only need to attend the following courses once and can replace the course in the second subject with a free elective subject:
- Introduction to diachronic and synchronic Romance linguistics
- The literatures of the Romance world in a historical-cultural context
- Intercultural communication
- Introduction to foreign language didactics *
- Seminar for the preparation of academic theses
* The VO/VU is offered across languages at the Departments of English, Romance and Slavic Studies; if the VO/VU is not offered at the Department of Romance Studies, it must be taken from the curriculum of the teaching subjects BKS/R/Slo or English or from the courses offered by the Department of Linguistics.
Teacher training students of two languages also only need to complete this course once (at one of the above-mentioned institutes) and can in this case replace the VO/VU of their second language subject with a free elective subject.
For the free elective subject, it is recommended to choose a course from the subject didactics. It is important that the number of ECTS credits of the credited courses and the courses to be credited correspond to each other.
