About the book: The media have always been a double-edged sword, as they function equally as enabling structures and as systems of standardisation and discipline. Often in a latent and almost uncanny way, media apparatuses regulate perceptions, ‘format’ subjects and sometimes produce alienation precisely where they promise participation. Literature continually re-examines, reflects upon and problematises this ambivalent power of the media – and at times exercises it itself. Using the example of French-language literature, the contributions in this volume explore the sometimes abysmal forms of expression of media power at all levels of textual and meaning-making, demonstrating that these produce effects that are both social and anti-social.
