Descriptions of the world - descriptive worlds: How literary texts descriptively guide our perception.

The Department of Romance Studies is pleased to announce the publication of a volume that has emerged from many years of exchange with colleagues from the Faculty of Humanities and is dedicated to the diversity of literary descriptive practices.

Kurt Hahn | Anne-Kathrin Reulecke | Steffen Schneider | Julia Zimmermann (eds.):

Descriptio - Potentials of Literary DescriptionRombach (Litterae) 2025

Describing has always had a difficult position in literary studies and even in descriptological systematics is usually determined in dependence on narrative. This volume takes a different approach and explores the potential of description beyond narrative ties. Exemplary case studies and an essay by Gérard Genette, translated into German for the first time, demonstrate how descriptive procedures by no means only depict reality, but first and foremost constitute it. They are situated in contexts of genre and rhetorical history and open up specific aesthetic, epistemological and cultural-historical dimensions. In the interplay between referentiality and reflexivity, between world and word, the description always remains in motion.

With contributions by: Gérard Genette | Werner Wolf | Anne-Kathrin Reulecke | Eveline Krummen | Ursula Gärtner | Julia Zimmermann | Albert Göschl | Kurt Hahn | Steffen Schneider | Astrid Poier-Bernhard
