Like the Cannes Film Festival or the Aix-en-Provence Opera Festival, the Avignon Theater Festival is one of the outstanding venues for contemporary artistic production in France. Every year, current trends in the national and international theater landscape are brought to the stage here and are often the subject of controversial debate.
The visit to the festival will take place as part of an academically supervised excursion course in July 2024. We will visit selected main performances of the festival in order to contextualize reception impressions, discuss theater aesthetics in detail and sharpen our skills in performance analysis. In preparatory units and during the trip, we will examine the history of the festival as a striking example of French cultural policy. An exchange and academic program with students from the University of Leipzig and the Aix-Marseille Université are also planned in this context.
Local costs are expected to be €180 for the youth hostel (4 nights with breakfast and packed lunch), plus €150 - €200 for the theater tickets (the current prices have not yet been fixed). Individual travel costs will also be covered. Efforts will be made to subsidize the trip.
The number of participants is limited to a total of 8 students. In addition to a preliminary discussion in the first week of the course, a date for a preparatory online unit with the French German studies students from Aix-en-Provence will be set for April.
