The Festival d'Avignon is one of the outstanding events of the French cultural year. Every summer, both current trends in international theatre and complex adaptations of classical plays can be admired not far from (and in) the Palais des Papes. The variety of genres, aesthetics and performance and discussion formats presented has been impressing audiences from all over the world since 1947. The southern French city itself regularly becomes a multiple, polyphonic, pluricultural stage.
In order to experience all this in its unique atmosphere, we will travel to Avignon in July 2025 and visit selected main performances of the 79th festival edition as well as off-stage plays to discuss their types of staging and theatre as well as their cultural and political dimensions. In a preparatory unit, we will also look at the remarkable history of the festival and the formative internationality and interculturality of the Festival d'Avignon. Academic exchange with students from Leipzig University and the Université d'Avignon, whom we will get to know as part of the BIP, will play a key role in this.
