“Like a scalpel, Agnello Hornby's words dissect the evils of an
island that is still struggling with the mafia.
A mafia that does not murder in the streets, but is a subtle,
insidious one.”
(Il Giornale di Vicenza)
Nenti sacciu e nenti vogghiu sapìri - I know nothing, I want to know nothing. How Cosa Nostra gets two good guys. Dossier
The childhood of friends Giovanni and Santino is carefree, the summer days in Sicilian Sciacca by the sea unforgettable, the dreams and little escapes. "What might become of us?" But the future has long since been forged by other hands, by ambitious mothers and powerful patrons in the background. Giovanni becomes a respected lawyer and a pawn in the hands of dubious people. While the single-minded Santino rises to become a concrete lord and earns fast money with obscure building contracts. Both make excellent deals, build luxury villas and celebrate success in the dark 1980s. But the web of dependencies becomes ever more threatening and pulls them into its depths...
Simonetta Agnello Hornby, born in Palermo in 1945, left Sicily against the wishes of her aristocratic family and studied abroad. She has lived in London since 1972 and works as a lawyer for the rights of socially disadvantaged people and victims of domestic violence. In her literary works, she focuses on the island of her origin, where she spends her summers. She is one of Italy's most successful authors and her debut novel "The Almond Picker" is a bestseller that has been translated into 19 languages. Most recently: "Era un bravo ragazzo" (Mondadori 2023)/"He was a good boy" (Folio Verlag, February 2024)
