Bruno Kreisky Prize for the political book 2024!
What does war mean? When the war in Ukraine becomes omnipresent in 2022, Francesca Melandri embarks on a deeply personal search for clues: Her father survived the "retreat from Russia" in the winter of 1942/43 - Italian soldiers fled from the Red Army in shoes with cardboard soles, tens of thousands froze to death, a trauma in Italy's collective memory. Your father was stationed in Ukraine. What did he experience, why was he there? Melandri shows us parallels to the current war - an indispensable book for understanding our present.
Francesca Melandri, born in Rome, first made a name for herself as an author of screenplays for cinema and television and is one of the most popular Italian authors of our time. Most recently published: Alle, außer mir (Wagenbach 2018)/Sanguegiusto (2017); Kalte Füße (Wagenbach 2024)/Piedifreddi (2024). On 7 May, she will receive the Bruno Kreisky Prize in Vienna.
